SHOT 4/30/23 3:01:39 PM - A tree trunk painted in the likeness of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe near Los Encinitos, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The capillas are often dedicated to certain patron saints, in this case Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe. Our Lady of Guadalupe is a powerful and ubiquitous symbol of Mexican identity because some guess that Our Lady of Guadalupe's skin tone matches that of Mexico's indigenous population: light brown. She is as much revered for her striking similarity to the vanquished native Mexican population as she is for being the mother of God. Often times the capillas contain prayer candles, pictures, personal artifacts or notes of thanks. (Photo by Marc Piscotty © 2023)
