SHOT 7/20/08 10:36:59 AM - Hiking on Apex Trail in Golden, Co. (part of Jefferson County Open Space) with Tanner, a male Vizsla. Tanner's tongue and breathing attempt to keep him cool as he pants in the hot morning sun. Thermoregulation is the ability of an organism to keep its body temperature within certain boundaries, even when temperature surrounding is very different. This process is one aspect of homeostasis: a dynamic state of stability between an animal's internal environment and its external environment (the study of such processes in zoology has been called ecophysiology or physiological ecology). If the body is unable to maintain a normal temperature and it increases significantly above normal, a condition known as heat stroke occurs. The opposite condition, when body temperature decreases below normal levels, is known as hypothermia. Due to the proximity of Denver, this is a popular trail. Although it can be crowded on weekends and evenings during the week, it still provides a great getaway from the city. The park has a variety of trails. You'll be able to ride ridges overlooking the city, through a dense forest, or through a secluded valley. This valley, known as Apex Gulch was actually one of the original wagon trails that lead up to Central City. The Apex Trail system is popular with hikers and mountain bikers as well..(Photo by Marc Piscotty / © 2008)
