SHOT 9/17/08 11:24:50 AM - The Monarch Crest ride is a segment of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT), a 3,100-mile shared-use route from Canada to Mexico. The Monarch Crest segment offers more than 30 miles of trails and incredible mountain scenery. Commonly done as shuttle ride; expect to encounter a few thousand feet of climbing and more than 6,000 feet of fun, non-technical descending. The Crest Trail is at a very high elevation, even by Colorado standards. Monarch Pass, the starting point of the ride, is at 11,312 feet elevation. The trail climbs from Monarch Pass to traverse a high ridge at nearly 12,000 feet for much of its distance. The trail is traditionally rideable from July through September but the dates vary according to weather patterns. The ride ends near the town of Salida, Co. .(Photo by Marc Piscotty / © 2008)
