SHOT 10/18/2007 - Mark Wilkerson, 23, of Colorado Springs, Co. at his apartment in Colorado Springs with his wife, Sarah, 24. Wilkerson enlisted in the Army in the summer of his junior year of high school, before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, through a delayed entry program. Wilkerson served in a military police battalion and was deployed to Iraq but after returning from his first deployment, he says, "I came up with the conclusion that we were not there for the reasons stated and I was no longer able to serve the military in any aspect." He had filed for conscientious objector status after his first tour in Iraq, but was denied; he appealed but would not not be heard until returning from a second tour in Iraq. He went AWOL for 18 months and then turned himself in to his unit. Wilkerson was sentenced to seven months in military prison and was finally released on July 13th of this year..(Photo by Marc Piscotty © 2007)
