SHOT 4/30/23 11:06:18 AM - A roadside capilla featuring a statue of San Judas Tadeo attached to a small tienda near Durango, Baja Sur California, Mexico. San Judas Tadeo, commonly known as Saint Jude was one of the Twelve Apostles. Depictions of this saint, especially in Mexico, include a medallion on the chest with Christ’s image (representing evangelism), a staff and a hatchet (reminder of his martyrdom). He is considered to be a direct intercessor to Jesus Christ and as a saint to appeal to in difficult and desperate situations and is credited with many miracles. Often times the capillas contain prayer candles, pictures, personal artifacts or notes of thanks and are a place for travelers to rest and pray for protection on their journey.
