SHOT 7/24/08 1:53:35 PM - A pair of backpackers hike along the Copper Creek Trail #983 in Crested Butte, Co. looking for a camping spot for the evening. The trail is located in the Gunnison National Forest. Gunnison National Forest is a U.S. National Forest covering 1,672,136 acres (2,612.71 sq mi, or 6,766.89 km) in Mesa, Gunnison, Hinsdale and Saguache Counties in Western part of the U.S. state of Colorado. The forest was created by Theodore Roosevelt on June 13, 1905 as the Cochetopa Forest Reserve, and named after explorer John W. Gunnison. The trail is open to hiking and horseback riding. A former coal mining town now called "the last great Colorado ski town", Crested Butte is a destination for skiing, mountain biking, and a variety of other outdoor activities.
