Aspens turn golden yellow as the amount of daylight slowly decreases every fall, switching off the mechanism in the leaves that creates chlorophyll. Aspen trees are all native to cold regions with cool summers extending south at high-altitude areas such as mountains or high plains. The Quaking Aspen of North America is known for its leaves turning spectacular shades of red and yellow in the autumn every year.
