SHOT 2/9/20 12:43:09 PM - A hermit crab emerges from its shell on a beach in Sayulita, Mexico. Hermit crabs are decapod crustaceans of the superfamily Paguroidea. Most of the approximately 1,110 species possess an asymmetric abdomen concealed in a scavenged mollusk shell. Land hermit crabs, spend most of their life on land as terrestrial species in tropical areas, though even they require access to both freshwater and saltwater to keep their gills damp or wet to survive and to reproduce. Sayulita is a small fishing village about 25 miles north of downtown Puerto Vallarta in the state of Nayarit, Mexico, with a population of approximately 4,000. Known for its consistent river mouth surf break, roving surfers "discovered" Sayulita in the late 60's with the construction of Mexican Highway 200. In recent years, it has become increasingly popular as a holiday and vacation destination, especially with surfing enthusiasts and American and Canadian tourists. (Photo by Marc Piscotty / © 2020)
