Two Elks Lodge at Vail Ski Resort
A view of Two Elk Lodge and part of China Bowl looking through the antlers of an elk statue that stands beside the lodge on Thursday December 15, 2005. The lodge is located in the back bowls of Vail Ski Resort and is adding an addition that should increase seating by about 200 or more seats. The lodge was burnt to the ground in 1998 in an apparent act of ecoterrorism. The fires damaged or destroyed four buildings including Two Elk Lodge, the ski patrol headquarters, and four lifts at the top of the mountain. A new lodge was built on the site and opened in 2000 and the fire remains one of the nation's costliest ecoterrorism incidents. Federal prosecutors have identified 28-year-old Chelsea Dawn Gerlach, known to investigators as "Country Girl," as a prime suspect in the 1998 Vail arsons that caused $12 million in damages..(MARC PISCOTTY/ © 2005)
