MAP0144 DRM Raft Trip

New Life program member Mike Kripakov (cq, center), 36, paddles with raftmates through some small rapids as they run Brown's Canyon along the Arkansas River Wednesday May 31, 2006 with other members of the New Life program from the Denver Rescue Mission. The trip is a "day off" from the struggles of overcoming an alcohol or drug dependency and it shows the men and women how to have a good time without relying on alcohol or drugs. For many it was their first experience on a river and an introduction to the great outdoor experiences that Colorado has to offer. It is the fifth year the Denver Rescue Mission has taken men and women on the trip and the entire experience is donated by Wilderness Aware, a rafting company out of Buena Vista, that also uses the trip as a training component for new river guides. In the background (left to right) are guides A.J. Lockwood (cq), Chad Bevan (cq), Ross Greedy (cq) and New Life program member Richard Vigil. Kripakov said he has been in the program for four months and said it was his first time in a whitewater raft..(MARC PISCOTTY/ © 2006)
