SHOT 1/30/10 11:13:33 AM - An image of Saint Toribio (in Latin Thuribius) Romo González posted with a rosary at a three story tall capilla near the town of La Noriega, Mexico on Highway 200. Saint Toribio Romo González was a Mexican martyr who died in the Cristero War. He was put on trial and ordered by the government when the religious persecutions began in 1927 to confine himself to his residence and was not allowed to pray the Rosary in public or to say Mass. He enventually was shot and killed by government troops. The capilla was filled with prayer candles, rosaries, pictures of loved ones and other religious artifacts. Roadside capillas, or tiny chapels, in the Mexican states of Nayarit, Sinaloa and Sonora. The capillas are common along the roads and highways of Mexico which is heavily Catholic and are often dedicated to certain patron saints or to the memory of a loved one that has passed away.
