SHOT 03/12/2003 - Greater Sandhill Cranes gather at Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge near Alamosa every spring and fall as they migrate between their breeding grounds in the Northern United States and southern Canada and their wintering area at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico. As many as 20,000 cranes take advantage of the nearly 16,000 acres of marsh and wetlands at Monte Vista every year. A couple of Greater Sandhill Cranes reinforce their mating pair with a courtship dance Wednesday. The cranes mate for life and will mate after completing their migration..(Photo Marc Piscotty © 2003)
