SHOT 10/17/19 6:20:15 PM - Aerial photos of a farmer harvesting corn with a combine outside of Moravia, Iowa as the growing season comes to a close. The modern combine harvester, or simply combine, is a versatile machine designed to efficiently harvest a variety of grain crops. The name derives from its combining four separate harvesting operations—reaping, threshing, gathering, and winnowing—into a single process. The production of corn (Zea mays mays, also known as "maize") plays a major role in the economy of the United States. The US is the largest corn producer in the world, with 96,000,000 acres of land reserved for corn production. Corn growth is dominated by west/north central Iowa and east central Illinois. Approximately 13% of its annual yield is exported. (Photo by Marc Piscotty / © 2019)
