SHOT 10/21/17 2:03:59 PM - The American Falls is the second-largest of the three waterfalls that together are known as Niagara Falls on the Niagara River along the Canada–U.S. border. Unlike the much larger Horseshoe Falls, of which two-thirds is located in Ontario, Canada and one-third in the U.S. state of New York, the American Falls is entirely within the United States. Located on the Niagara River, which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, the combined falls form the highest flow rate of any waterfall in North America that has a vertical drop of more than 165 feet (50 m). During peak daytime tourist hours, more than six million cubic feet of water goes over the crest of the falls every minute. Horseshoe Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America, as measured by flow rate. Niagara Falls is famed both for its beauty and as a valuable source of hydroelectric power. The falls are 17 miles (27 km) north-northwest of Buffalo, New York. Buffalo, N.Y. is the second most populous city in the state of New York and is located in Western New York on the eastern shores of Lake Erie and at the head of the Niagara River. By 1900, Buffalo was the 8th largest city in the country, and went on to become a major railroad hub, the largest grain-milling center in the country and the home of the largest steel-making operation in the world. The latter part of the 20th Century saw a reversal of fortunes: by the year 1990 the city had fallen back below its 1900 population levels. (Photo by Marc Piscotty / © 2017)
