Lowry AFB temporary dorms for Hurricane Katrina evacuees

Hurricane Katrina evacuee Troylynn Smith, 42, of New Orleans pauses in exhaustion while making phone calls trying to track down the rest of her family Wednesday evening. She was separated from her family after the hurricane and said, "I want to let them know I'm alright". About 250 Hurricane Katrina evacuees are being housed temporarily in a set of dorms on the old Lowry Air Force Base as a result of the efforts of numerous community groups and the Governor's office. An around the clock effort got the neglected dorms into livable shape in time to host the families and individuals with nowhere to call home in the wake of the storm and flooding that destroyed New Orleans and much of the Gulf Coast area. Evacuees can make free calls in rooms set up to help them track down lost family members and get their personal matters straightened out..(MARC PISCOTTY/ © 2005)
