SHOT 8/20/2003 - Charla Worsham (left) and Hadley Paul, both of Austin, Tx., look out over some of the massive chasms at Gunnison Point Wednesday as they take in the beauty of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The U.S. Department of the Interior reached an agreement with the State of Colorado in April 2003 that establishes a base flow of 300 cubic feet per second on the Gunnison River through the Black Canyon National Park near Montrose. It is claimed that the minimal flow will protect the fish population in the river and the national park will have a water right to flood level flows to help scour the canyon floor of sediment and vegetation. Opponents argue that the landscape and character of the river will be forever altered and rafters and anglers contend that the reduced flows threaten their livelihoods and pastimes all for the sake of more water for development along the Front Range..(Photo by Marc Piscotty / © 2003)
