therapy pets

4/11/08 10:40:14 AM -- Denver, CO. -- Ordinary dogs as therapy animals -- .Shannon Pryor, 29, of Wheatridge, Co. volunteers with 'Biscuit', her two year-old male English Bulldog as a therapy dog tandem every other Friday at Pine Grove Elementary School in Parker, Co. 'Biscuit' and Pryor work with special needs children at the school helping them build confidence through handling and showing the dog off to classmates and working on reading skills as an understanding and sympathetic listener. The training required for this type of work is much less intensive than a service dog and therefore more accessible to many pet owners. Pryor said, "I love volunteering and it makes you feel good inside helping kids". The program is run through Denver Pet Partners and the Delta Society. Kindergartner Beau Tomsic, 5, of Parker, Co. places velcro play animals on the back of 'Biscuit' as the two play together..(Photo by Marc Piscotty / © 2008).
