SHOT 1/10/23 11:28:10 AM - Mardi Gras beads adorn a razor fence in downtown New Orleans, Louisiana. Beads used on Mardi Gras (known as Shrove Tuesday in some regions) are purple, green, and gold, with these three colors containing the Christian symbolism of justice, faith, and power, respectively. The practice of throwing beads at Mardi Gras was inspired by Renaissance era festivals that took place before Lent, where revelers would toss things into the air in celebration of the coming fast. New Orleans is a Louisiana city on the Mississippi River, near the Gulf of Mexico. Nicknamed the "Big Easy," it's known for its round-the-clock nightlife, vibrant live-music scene and spicy, singular cuisine reflecting its history as a melting pot of French, African and American cultures. Embodying its festive spirit is Mardi Gras, the late-winter carnival famed for raucous costumed parades and street parties. (Photo by Marc Piscotty / © 2022)
