SHOT 11/13/2002 - The local medical college in Chelyabinsk has a collection of normal and malformed fetuses on display to teach the students about normal and non-normal life cycle development. Many of the villages near Chelyabinsk sat directly in the path of the fallout of the 1957 accident at the Mayak nuclear weapons facility. Studies done in the region since the accident have revealed high rates of premature births, miscarriages and an estimated one-third of babies are born with some type of physical defect. The particular fetus was stillborn with most of his upper skull missing. The professor who runs the museum said, "most frequently, environmental circumstances are to blame".
