SHOT 3/12/10 9:54:25 AM - An avalanche beacon, probe and shovel are all required to load the lift to go skiing or snowboarding at Silverton Mountain in Silverton, Co. Silverton Mountain is unique amongst ski resorts requiring a guide (most of the season), avalanche gear and limiting the number of daily visitors. There are multiple bowls, chutes, cliffs and natural terrain features to be discovered during a visit to Silverton Mountain. It is the highest Ski Area in North America with a peak of 13,487' and it is also the steepest with no easy way down. The mountain is left in it's natural state with the exception of the avalanche reduction work which occurs. There is only one chair at the mountain though most skiiers and snowboarders will end up hiking in various directions at the top. The mountain also features heliskiing trips for $159 a trip (at the time of visit). The mountain opened in 2002. (Photo by Marc Piscotty / © 2010)
