SHOT 5/3/2007 - Aurinia saxatilis (Basket of Gold, Goldentuft alyssum, Golden Alyssum, Gold-dust, Golden-tuft alyssum, Golden-tuft madwort, Rock madwort; syn. Alyssum saxatile L., Alyssum saxatile L. var. compactum Hort.) is an ornamental plant native to Asia and Europe. Basket of Gold is hardy to zone 3. It is in leaf all year, in flower from April to June, and the seeds ripen in July. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees, Lepidoptera (Moths & Butterflies). The plant is self-fertile. It is noted for attracting wildlife. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils.
