"Radioactive Hell : Russia's Hidden Secret"
Tatar Karabolka, a tiny Siberian village in Russia, sat directly in the path of the fallout of a 1957 reactor accident at the nearby Mayak nuclear weapons facility. The Russian government kept it all secret relocating Russian Karabolka but not the Muslim community of Tatar Karabolka. The village was home to nearly 3,000 people at one time but only about 500 remain and those that are left believe their time is limited. It has been estimated that those living closest to Mayak received doses of radiation 50 times higher than that seen during the 1986 Chernobyl accident. Those that are still alive have a long list of health problems including tumors, cancer, diabetes and arthritis. The Russian government has reluctantly admitted to the accident but the victims are lucky if they receive a meager monthly stipend equal to about $10 to cover their extensive medical expenses.
"ThunderRidge : A Look Inside A Suburban High School"
In the wake of the shootings at Columbine High School many people openly wondered how a tragedy like this could take place in an idyllic setting such as Littleton, Colo. They wondered how two suburban teens could harbor such rage and just what in the killer’s lives caused the deaths of 13 innocent people. With those questions in mind, Rocky Mountain News photographer Marc Piscotty set out to document life inside the walls of ThunderRidge High School.
ThunderRidge, a school with similar demographics as Columbine, was a year-long effort to reveal the honest truths of high school. It will always be a defining moment in most people’s lives and for as much as it has changed over the years, much of it has remained the same.
